If you've had a particularly harsh winter, your chain link fence may be paying the price. Winter weather can wreak havoc on your chain link fence, especially if you didn't take steps to winterize it this past fall. As soon as the weather warms up, you'll need to get outside and care for your fence. Here are four steps you'll need to take once spring arrives.
Clear Away the Vegetation
If your chain link fence has been covered in vegetation this winter, you'll need to clear it away as soon as the weather warms up. Dead brush and weeds can cause serious damage to your chain link fence, especially if it's allowed to remain there for too long. As soon as spring arrives, spend some time clearing away all the vegetation that's surrounding your chain link fence. If you've used your fence as support for your winter vegetable garden, remove the dead plants as soon as possible.
Give It a Good Cleaning
Once you have all the vegetation removed from your fence, you'll want to give it a good cleaning. This step is particularly important if your fence has been exposed to heavy rains or snow. Here are two problems that will need to be addressed while you're cleaning your fence.
If your chain link fence has been exposed to snow and rain this winter, you could end up with some serious rust problems come spring. You can remove rust deposits by using steel wool or sand paper.
If you find mold on your fence, you'll need to remove it immediately. You can do that with a solution of water and vinegar. Fill a garden sprayer with water and add about two cups of vinegar. Saturate the mold with the vinegar solution and then wipe clean with an abrasive sponge.
Repair Visible Damage
If you discover visible damage to your chain link fence, you'll need to have it repaired as soon as possible. Loose panels will need to be tightened to ensure the proper level of security for your home. Damaged chain link and posts should be replaced.
Apply a Fresh Coat of Sealant
Once you've taken care of the cleaning and the repairs, you should apply a fresh coat of sealant to your chain link fence. Applying a waterproof sealant to your fence will help protect it from mold and rust damage. The sealant will also make cleaning your fence that much easier.
