Having a pool around your home is a great amenity. On a hot day, your family can simply go back to the backyard and find some refreshment. Besides being a good place to escape the heat, a pool can provide you with a great place to get some exercise. While a pool is a great home feature, it does present a hazard for children and pets. The third leading cause of death for children is accidental drowning. Thus, if you have a pool, you need to do something to keep your family safe when you can't be around to watch them. You have two choices: a pool fence or a safety pool cover. Each has its advantages and disadvantages, but for convenience and safety, there is only one winner.
The Safety Pool Cover
Not every pool cover is a safety cover. Some pool covers are simply meant to keep debris out of your pool. If someone tries to walk out on your pool, the pool cover will give way. If a child walks out on the cover, and it collapses, the cover can wrap around the child and make drowning even more likely. A safety cover will have anchors that keep the cover in place so that a child or pet can walk out on the cover without fear of falling through.
The Pool Fence
The pool cover will keep debris, pets, and children out of your pool, but it may also keep you out. The problem with a cover is that you have to undo all of the anchors to get in. With a pool fence, all you have to do is open the lock and enter your pool. Thus, if you want to keep your children safe, and you want to easily access your pool when you are in the mood for a swim, then the pool fence is the better way to go.
You might like the feature of keeping debris out of your pool, but you also want convenience, then you can compromise by installing a retractable pool cover and a pool fence. Pool fences can vastly reduce the likelihood of children wandering into your pool area and getting in trouble. If you have small children in your home, then you definitely want to install a pool fence. It will give you peace of mind so that you can enjoy your pool without having an anxiety attack very time your children wander out of sight.
